Natural weight loss supplements
You should know by now that the secret to losing weight lies in eating clean and being as active as possible. But if you are looking for something to boost and help with your weight loss endeavors, then there’s help in the form of natural weight loss supplements often found in diet pills.
Eager to learn more about these weight loss supplements? Well, here’s a list of the 15 most popular weight loss aids, and research proving and supporting them and their working.
1. Conjugated linoleic acid
Full-fat dairy products like cheese and butter contain a harmless and natural trans fat called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which helps induce weight loss in three ways.
It helps reduce the appetite, increases the body metabolism rates and also increases the body’s ability at breaking down fat.
Accordingly, 18 separate studies proved that subjects who took CLA lost 0.2 pounds every week for six months. Participants in another review conducted in 2012 experienced a weight loss of 3 pounds.
However, CIA can trigger digestive problems and may lead to problems like fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, and inflammation.
Dr. Joseph Mercola – Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) for Weight Loss
It was noticed that while 30 overweight men who took forskolin weight loss pills did not experience any weight loss, there was a change in their body composition. There was an increase in their body’s muscle mass and reduction in its fat mass.
This is because forskolin, which is extracted from a mint family plant, raises the cellular levels of a compound called cAMP which is supposed to increase fat burning.
However, there was no change in weight or body composition in a similar study conducted on 33 overweight women. There is no information stating any side effects of using forskolin, or its benefits.
3. Green coffee bean extract
It was through three separate studies that it was deduced that subjects who consumed green coffee bean extract lost 5.4 pounds more weight than those who took a placebo.
This is because unroasted coffee beans contain caffeine and chlorogenic acid, which helps with weight loss.
It also offers other benefits like high antioxidant levels, and the ability to lower blood pressure and sugar levels.
However, it also has some possible side effects too like nausea, anxiety, diarrhea, and insomnia.

4. Orlistat (Alli)
Orlistat weight loss pills help with weight loss by slowing down the breakdown of fat in the gut so that your body ends up absorbing fewer calories from the fatty food eaten.
11 studies revealed that people who took Alli ended up losing 6 pounds more than those taking placebo pills.
The drug is also helpful at lowering blood pressure levels, and another study showed that participants taking Alli had a 37% lower chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
However, Alli can lead to severe digestive problems like flatulence, loose stools, and difficulty in controlling bowel movements.

5. Yacon syrup
Yacon syrup contains fructooligosaccharides (FOS) that helps with weight reduction by reducing the secretion of the body’s hunger hormone ghrelin.
First brought to widespread attention in the diet world when Dr Ox discussed it benefits in 2013. Yacon Syrup is extracted from the roots of the yacon plant found in South America.
Though the body doesn’t digest yacon syrup, FOS gives a sweet flavour with only a third of sugar’s calories.
Only one study was conducted on 40 women with tremendous results. While 15 of the women who took a placebo for four months lost 3.5 pounds, the remaining 25 women lost 33 pounds after using yacon syrup.
There should be more research conducted in the future because this is a relatively new entrant to the weight loss world.

Hydroxycut is one famous brand names in the diet pill world and has been around for more than ten years see our full review here.
A trial group lost 21 pounds after taking the supplement for 3 months, thanks to the caffeine and plant extracts in it.
There are not many associated side effects but people sensitive to caffeine may experience insomnia, diarrhea, irritability, and nausea. However, there is no available information on its long-term effect.

7. Raspberry ketones
Raspberry ketones smell like raspberry and its synthetic version is said to help with weight loss.
Experiments conducted on rats have proven that it increases fat breakdown while improving the production of adiponectin which is believed to help with weight loss.
However, so far no study has been conducted on the effects of raspberry ketones on human beings.
This fiber from elephant yam helps to lose weight by turning into a gel and remains in the stomach so that you feel full for a longer period of time.
Three studies were conducted where the subjects took the supplement along with a healthy diet for 5 weeks to experience a total weight loss of 8 to 10 pounds.
While Glucomannan improves gut health through its nourishing bacteria it can also cause soft stools and bloating.

9. Green tea extract
Green tea extract is a common ingredient in many weight loss supplements because it contains the antioxidant EGCG which helps burn fat. It also increases norepinephrine, the fat burning hormone levels.
Studies have proven that green tea extract does help with weight loss, and especially targets belly fat.
It doesn’t have any marked side effects unless you are sensitive to the little caffeine it has.
Caffeine is a common weight loss ingredient in supplements because it helps boost body metabolism by as much as 11% and helps burn 29% more fat.
Caffeine naturally exists in dark chocolate, coffee, and green tea and can get addictive to eventually hamper your sleep.
There’s also the possibility of suffering from other side effects like nausea, trembling, anxiety, and diarrhea.
11. Garcinia cambogia
Most diet pills contain garcinia cambogia extract which is the skin of the small, green, pumpkin-like fruit garcinia cambogia.
It contains hydroxycitric acid which in animal studies seem to inhibit fat producing enzymes.
However, studies on 130 participants showed no difference between participants who took the extract and those who took the placebo.
Subjects in 11 studies who took garcinia cambogia extract for several weeks experienced a weight loss of 2 pounds.
There are no side effects associated with the supplement, except for some who suffered from mild digestive problems.
Meratrim has two plant extracts that help in the fat burning process and makes it difficult for fat cells to multiply.
The single study conducted on this relatively new product gave promising results.
It showed that Meratrim users on a 2000 calorie diet managed to lose 11 pounds in addition to 4 inches off their waist.
The group participants also experienced a drop in their triglyceride, cholesterol and blood sugar levels without any side effects.
Berberine is a bioactive compound and an alkaloid found in many plants, including the berberis shrub. It affects the body at a molecular level by giving a boost to the body metabolism.
It does this by boosting the cellular enzyme AMP-Activated Protein Kinase. It reduces blood sugar and cholesterol levels and helps with weight loss. Overweight participants in a 12-week study lost about 5 pounds and 3.6% of body fat.
In another 12-week study, obese men and women suffering from metabolic syndrome managed to reduce their body mass index (BMI) from 31.5 to 27.4 and experienced an overall improvement in health. The only side effects reported were some digestive problems like diarrhea, flatulence and stomach pain.

14. Bitter orange or Synephrine
Bitter orange contains a similar compound to ephedrine which was once extensively used in weight loss pills like the famous Ephedra but later banned by the FDA because of its serious side effects.
Though less potent than ephedrine, synephrine helps suppress the appetite and stimulates the burning of fat. While there’s not much research on Synephrine, ephedrine helped with short-term weight loss.
However be careful while using Synephrine because it can get addictive and lead to heart problems.
